Finding referral information in a large metropolis like Los Angeles can be a daunting process. Fortunately, there are resource directories that can assist you in finding the right resource for your need. Below are a couple of resources that will put you in the right direction.
211 Los Angeles, formerly known as Infoline LA, is a member of the nationwide consortium for offering standardized referral information (Infoline's taxonomy of social services is used throughout the country). Dialing 211 will put you in touch with multilingual staff to connect you to the right resource 24 hours/7 days a week. If you prefer to search through the resource database directly, point your web browser to healthycity.org. Besides the directory service, Healthy City has other information tools for you to use as you search (e.g. resource mapping with other data sources such as census tracts). Below are the directory's categories:
Another resource that deserves mention is The People's Guide to
Welfare, Health & Other Services, an online compendium of resources for individuals needing assistance with income, jobs, education and training, food, healthcare, and housing. The guide has accurate and up to date information, written in an easy to understand format. It is compiled by the Los Angeles Coalition to End Homelessness and Hunger at LACEHH.org

MedlinePlus's Go Local Service will also provide resource directory assistance for Californians. See MedlinePlus's Go Local information site. Some LA and SD County information has already been entered, so give it a try.
